It’s something most of us have to do now and again, go back to the drawing board. Back to basics when you’ve gotten out over your skis. That was myself and Grav. For a long time I have been making tutorials to put together websites and that rather removed me from the day to day of uploading and chmod or chown command lines.

I’ve had to go back after failure upon failure of something so simple as installing Grav. Except for the marks I left kicking myself in the nether regions I am back at it and this time I am backing up my server which brings me to my point in this pointed struggle: Servers.

About a year and one half ago I had had it with hosting companies who sold basic servers to the public but seemed to lack any decent support to help a person along when they come up against it. The assumption seems to be that no one who purchases a server from these companies is not also an expert on servers. I would guess that this attitude probably leaves out about forty percent of those who decided to give servers a try? That forty percent of people aho are embarking on a learning experience. You can’t blame them for not responding to the newbs I suppose as there is so much that goes into maintaining a server business. However, I also believe that the newbs are their future business if they are decent to the newbs.

If you found a hosting service that works for you let me know. After a lot of tries I fell in with Webdock.Their system makes the SSH and some of the chmods and chowns a little easier on the brain and their support is very good. Better than most I believe. They have servers in the U.S. and Denmark and there is no noticeable latency from overseas.

As for me, I use their free snapshots and free backups liberally and you would be surprised at the amount of time that frees up when you’re experimenting as I do. Their docs are huge and self-explanatory from FTP to Docker installation and all in between. I say, go for it if you want a slightly easier time getting started. It takes a while to get used to it and find your way around but it is worth it in the savings. I pay $6.00 a month for this website and less for others and this is 4GB. Tell them I sent you. Maybe I’ll get a hello back as I have no attachment with them monetarily. I just use them and like the way they do things.
