It’s been a long time since I used an FTP client to upload files. As I found that I, once again, had use of such a client I went in search of one that would do both FTP and SFTP. Back when I first began doing this type of thing it was all FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Things change rapidly and a person cannot fall asleep at the wheel. I seem to have done just that, however.
What is involved with SFTP is quite picky. You can’t just assume you have it based on past history and experience. Especially when it comes to the “user” directory that is needed for uploading to work. SFTP needs the user to be of the directory “www-data.” I missed this and went with bin-bash . . . until just now when I did something quite unusual for myself and actually read the docs as to how to properly upload to a Linux (Ubuntu) server. Tarnation! There was the facts of the matter in black and white if I had just taken three minutes to read the dang instructions!
I now have a user that exists in an ssh-keyed, /www/data/ directory. Easy as pie if you’re not thick skulled and are more than willing to read docs. I am off on a new adventure that I hope will cause a cessation of hair pulling.
I am trying out Cyberduck, avoiding FileZilla due to adware they insist on putting into the code of their uploader, and WinSCP. I use to use FileZilla and it worked quite well so I am not berating that FTP client but there are, if I recall correctly, a button that, if clicked, imparts problems into the uploader. Please straighten me out if I am incorrect about that now.
It is all just another reason to join THIS.
